Cranial Osteopathy

A gentle and relaxing natural therapy

About Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a particular form of osteopathy that involves the practitioner placing their hands on the patient’s head. It is a gentle and subtle form of treatment that uses light pressures and prolonged holds to balance deep patterns of tension within the nervous system and the connective tissues of the body.

Although these techniques can be used on any area of the body, they were originally developed on the head, which remains their most popular use. In cranial osteopathy osteopaths do not directly manipulate the bones of the skull – which start to fuse early in life – in the same way that they manipulate other joints, but use a highly developed sense of touch and gentle motions to create deep states of relaxation and facilitate the body’s own healing mechanisms.

Safe and Relaxing

Many people find cranial osteopathy to be particularly relaxing and soothing treatment. It can help to bring about a deep relaxation, balancing the central nervous system and releasing deeply-held patterns of tension, as the minimal work of the osteopath facilitates the body’s own internal motions and healing mechanisms.

Cranial osteopathy is very safe and can be used for all sorts of patients and conditions, from athletes to children or elderly people. Its gentle nature makes it particularly suitable for babies, and for chronic pain sufferers who may find other osteopathic treatments painful.

Your First Appointment

At your first appointment your osteopath will ask you about your symptoms, when and how you started to feel any pain, and examine any pain areas as well as your general body mechanics and alignment.

Your osteopath will normally be able to give you a diagnosis, explain how many sessions you are likely to need, and proceed to treatment immediately.

Osteopathy is a gentle and non-invasive therapy so you shouldn’t normally feel any pain during treatment. Your osteopath will explain the treatment they are giving you, and you will be able to discuss and ask any questions you have as you go along.
